Naira marley speaks up
After two years of being cancelled by the court of public opinion, Naira Marley has now posted a tell-all video to explain his side of the controversy surrounding Mohbad’s untimely demise and the backlash he received since.
Recounting the tragic day in September 2023, he stated that he was taken by shock and disbelief when he heard the sad news.
Someone among us said Mohbad is dead and I thought they were lying. I thought it was a rouse to blow him up again. I was like, ‘People should be careful what they say. I saw reports saying that he died of an ear infection and I immediately felt they were lying.
The singer explained that despite not being in Nigeria at the time of Mohbad’s death, he was immediately blamed online.
“Next thing I knew, I was trending on Twitter and people started posting videos from the NDLEA issue that year. People posted old videos of the fight he had in 2022 with his manager.I wasn’t in the country, how can I be blamed? I can show you my passport stamped and when I came back to Nigeria. People started blaming me I didn’t even have time to mourn him properly.“

Naira Marley also questioned why the police detained him when, according to him, the real investigation should have focused on those around Mohbad in the hours leading to his death.
“‘If we were in a sane country, the police would have arrested everyone who was with him 24 to 48 hours before he died, the police had no reason to arrest me. I don’t understand, I wasn’t even in the country. People also dug up old videos of him and Sam larry. Sam Larry wasn’t even in the country that time.”
”I came to Nigeria to support the investigations because people were pointing fingers at me, so people would understand that I had nothing to do with it. When I came back to Nigeria, I was in kpanti for two months and they held my passport. They had no reason to hold me for that long in a working country.”
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, died on September 12, 2023, sparking outrage, protests, and calls for justice across Nigeria and beyond. His death was officially linked to complications from an injection administered by an auxiliary nurse, though circumstances around it remain widely debated.
With the President’s directive, thousands of Nigerians battling kidney failure are expected to gain renewed hope for treatment and survival.

Kidney patients across Nigeria have received a major relief as President Bola Tinubu approved a drastic reduction in the cost of dialysis treatment in federal hospitals from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000.
The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Information, Daniel Bwala, made the announcement on Monday, August 18, via his official X handle, noting that the policy has already taken effect in several federal medical centres and teaching hospitals across the six geopolitical zones.
“This subsidy is a reflection of the President’s commitment to making healthcare accessible and easing the financial burden on Nigerians,” Bwala stated.

According to the Presidency, dialysis at the newly subsidised rate is now available at the following facilities: Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebute-Metta, Lagos; FMC Jabi, Abuja; University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan; FMC Owerri, Imo; University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Borno; FMC Abeokuta, Ogun; Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH); FMC Azare, Bauchi; University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Edo; and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Cross River.
Bwala also revealed that more federal hospitals would be added before the year runs out, ensuring that more patients across the country benefit from the initiative.
Beyond dialysis, the Presidency highlighted that this reform is part of a wider healthcare strategy by the Tinubu administration.
Other programmes include the establishment of oncology and diagnostic centres, the retraining of 120,000 frontline health workers, the redesign of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) to strengthen primary healthcare access, and the approval of free Caesarean sections for vulnerable pregnant women in federal hospitals.
Healthcare advocates have long called for reduced dialysis costs, noting that many kidney patients abandon treatment due to its prohibitive price.
With the President’s directive, thousands of Nigerians battling kidney failure are expected to gain renewed hope for treatment and survival.
“This is not just policy,” Bwala added, “it is about saving lives and restoring dignity to Nigerian families.”
20 August 2025 at 8:21Both security and industry leaders agreed that only sustained attention, particularly from the media, could dismantle the entrenched cartels driving illegal mining across Nigeria.
Illegal mining is draining Nigeria’s economy of an estimated ₦13.7 trillion annually while fuelling banditry and terrorism, the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ajao Adewale, has warned.
Speaking at a forum organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council in Abuja on “The Fight Against Illegal Mining: Role of the Media”, Adewale described the menace as “one of Nigeria’s most dangerous national security threats.”
Citing figures from the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), the police chief explained that the country loses up to $9 billion annually to illegal mining and gold smuggling.
“Illegal mining is not just a mere economic crime; it fuels insecurity, degrades our environment, undermines lawful investment, and robs our nation of vital resources,” he said.
Adewale revealed that powerful Nigerians were driving these criminal networks, often using foreigners as fronts.ADVERTISEMENT
“Reports have shown that powerful Nigerians are the primary drivers of these operations while banditry and terrorism are bankrolled through this criminal network,” he stressed.
He listed Zamfara, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kaduna, Niger, Kwara, Osun, and parts of the FCT as hotspots. According to him, security agencies have arrested 72 suspects in Abuja alone between 2023 and 2024.
Journalists Urged to Expose Financiers of Nigeria’s Illegal Mining
Echoing the commissioner’s concerns, the National President of the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN), Dele Ayanleke, highlighted the human and environmental costs.
“From child labour in Nasarawa’s lithium fields to mercury poisoning in Zamfara’s gold sites, the costs are severe. Illegal mining undermines legitimate investors, destroys communities, and fuels insecurity,” he said, stressing the need for sustained public scrutiny.ADVERTISEMENT
Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, urged journalists to go beyond ordinary reportage.
“As gatekeepers of truth, we must investigate, expose, and educate the public on the devastating effects of illegal mining,” she charged.
Both security and industry leaders agreed that only sustained attention, particularly from the media, could dismantle the entrenched cartels driving illegal mining across Nigeria.
